Adventure Based Therapy

Description:

Liberty Resources, in partnership with On Care and TEAM Adventure, has developed an Adventure Based Therapy Program. This program is a one day event, held several times a year, which utilize local area ropes courses to facilitate positive changes in family dynamics or individual behaviors. This free program is designed to act as a supplement to a families' current involvement with therapeutic services and is currently being offered to families in Onondaga County only.

Referral Criteria are as follows:

Children and youth ages 8-18 (21 if in care) with serious emotional and behavioral challenges, and their families (parents, siblings, caregivers).

The whole family must be willing to participate (this is not just for the kids, it is family based).

The youth and/or family must be involved in counseling services since the Adventure Therapy program supports treatment goals as identified by the family.

These events will be held on June 2nd, July 28th, September 22nd, October 13 and November 17th. If the current event fills up, we will simply ask families what their next preferred date is and have them attend that day. Depending on the weather, October 13th and November 17th may be held inside at the Adventure Center in Liverpool.

We prefer that families transport themselves. However, if this is an issue or barrier, we can provide limited assistance and will work with families to get a ride, bus fare, taxi fare etc. Please contact us in advance if this is an issue that needs to be addressed.

What Others are Saying:

"This last weekend we attended the Adventure Therapy program at The Adventure Center.  We all loved it.  The kids wanted to know if they could do it again. My child responded so well to the therapists. My child was empowered and participated happily in all activities.  The therapists were so enthusiastic and made every event fun while making their point and providing some guidance."

"I would recommend this program for any family.  Working together and having a positive setting to play together and be nice to each without having to worry that someone is going to disappear or get hurt.  I don’t ever remember feeling like that anywhere else."

When asked what had the most impact, a participant stated that "realizing that there are different routes to reach the same goal." Another, when asked what was a high point stated, "we cooperated and worked patiently together as a team."

When asked about their overall experience, one participant stated, "very positive and fun." While another stated, "awesome and fun and I learned a lot."
